Dedication and Groundbreaking Services Held at Camp Dorothy Conference and Retreat Center
BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC- Dedication and Groundbreaking Ceremonies were held on Monday, September 7, 2009 (Labor Day) at Camp Dorothy Walls. Over 1000 Zionites from across the globe gathered for the dedication of the new conference and retreat Center (phase 1) and the groundbreaking for Phase 2). Eleven A.M.E. Zion Bishops were present and participated in the ceremony. The honorable Mayor Terry Bellamy (Asheville) brought greetings from the cities of Asheville and Black Mountain, North Carolina. She expressed appreciation and acknowledged and thanked members of the A.M.E. Zion Church who had volunteered time and resources to the education system and to non-profit organizations in the area. Mayor Bellamy stated that the significance of the new facility demonstrated what the power of people can do when they come together with a solid and unified vision. She challenged the congregation by saying, “come here, get restored and take it back. When the Lord builds a house on a true foundation, it works. Commit and touch some lives other than your own church members. If you ever get discouraged, think about “How Great Thou Art” and this time on the mountain”.
Many spoke of the visionary, Bishop Walls and those who followed making a dream a reality.
Senior Bishop George W. Walker defined the day as “a day of fellowship, a day to rejoice”. He announced the “Tree of Life Project” and explained that individuals or groups can purchase any portion of the tree. Bishop Walker said, “We want the tree to grow”. The tree will be planted on a wall in the new Conference and Retreat Center. Names of contributors will appear on the leaves of the tree.
He reminded the congregation that on September 3, 2007, groundbreaking services were held and today we were witnessing the dedication of the new facility. He said, “I believe that by September 2010 we will be back to dedicate Phase II”. A master plan of the 56 acres encompassing Camp Dorothy Walls was on display in the lobby of the gymnatorium.
President, Bishop Warren Brown responded on behalf of the Board of Bishops. Bishop Brown said, “I recognize your territory but we are all claiming membership because we are all one big family. Because you have done it, we have done it. Congratulations, we are looking forward to returning for Phase II.
Following the ceremonies, the group transitioned to the lodging unit for the ribbon cutting and a tour of the new facility. The groups stood in awesome wonder as they viewed the splendor, grandeur and magnificence of the center. For those unable to attend, words alone cannot suffice-seeing only is believing the wonders God hath wrought.
A complete account of the day’s activities can be found in the Star of Zion, the official organ of the A.M.E. Zion Church.
