Chi Sigma Zeta of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and The March of Dimes Promote 2009 Prematurity Awareness Month

Eager to make a difference in the Morristown community, the newly chartered chapter, Chi Sigma Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., has “hit the ground running” by announcing its first upcoming community service project: Prematurity Awareness Month.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month, and Wednesday, November 18, 2009, is Prematurity Awareness Day. This is when Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, in conjunction with the March of Dimes, focuses everyone’s attention on the impact premature births have on babies and families. This awareness is especially important because every year, more than half a million babies are born prematurely in our country including Morristown, TN.

In addition, during this month, Chi Sigma Zeta Chapter and The March of Dimes will also concentrate on sharing information with the public on the weekend before and after November 18 (November 14 and 15/November 21 and 22). Specially, on Sunday, November 15 and Sunday, November 22. Churches are asked to participate by placing information in their weekly bulletins or monthly newsletter. This community awareness will help give all babies a healthy start.
GREENEVILLE, TN- Eleventh month old Yordan Christian Gomez Mills, son of Gabriel Gomez and Heather Mills has become an experienced baby boy contest competitor. On September 12, 2009 Yordan won the Tennessee Valley Fair baby boy contest in Knoxville, Tennessee.

This contest included baby boy’s newborn to 16 months of age. Though he was the youngest contestant, Yordan walked on stage waving to the crowd while walking with his mother.

As the winner, he received a $50.00 savings bond, a $50.00 check, a $175.00 photo session, photos, a medallion and a trophy cup.

A month earlier, on August 7th thru the 9th, Yordan competed in the Sunburst International Model Search held in Atlanta, GA. He had earned the right to compete in Atlanta by winning the local Sunburst contest in Johnson City, Tennessee.

He received a trophy and the advance of $250.00 which paid for his entry in the state finals in Nashville. Though he was the youngest baby boy in this competition, Yordan won 4 trophies and was allowed to advance to Atlanta for the International finals.

Yordan finished in the top ten baby boys in newborn to 16 months competition in the Internationals. He finished in the top four in the categories of swimwear, daycare wear, photogenic and model search. By finishing in the top ten, he is automatically given a spot in the next year’s International competition and does not have to pay an entry fee. He won six trophies in the International competition.

His mother, Heather Gomez, says she has entered him in these competitions to help him gain confidence in appearing before crowds.

Yordan is the grandson of Rev. Cecil and Kathy Mills, Jr., of Greeneville, TN and Juana Gomez and the late Marcario Gomez of Mexico. His maternal grandparents, his uncle Clay, and Cory Brice accompanied Yordan and his mother to Atlanta. He is the great grandson of Ms. Elizabeth Mills and the late Rev. C. C. Mills, Sr., as well as Boyce Young and the late Naneva Young.
